As companies try to increase their online visibility at low costs, many are turning to search engine optimization (SEO) to make sure they appear high in search engine results pages. One expert says there are a number of mistakes firms should watch for when starting an SEO campaign.

Writing for SearchEngineWatch, Eric Enge says there are a number of common mistakes that companies can make that can ruin search engine optimization (SEO) – including not starting a campaign early enough.

Enge says that companies have a tendency to start their search engine optimization (SEO) campaign later than they should, even if they’re aware of the marketing tool. But he says that these firms also sometimes have the wrong impression of SEO.

"People in these organizations may think that SEO is about keyword selection and copywriting, but not realize that SEO also plays a critical role in technical implementation decisions," he writes. "The key to remember here: it’s easier to do it right the first time than to do it over."

Enge also notes that a limited amount of content on a website can also hinder a company’s search engine optimization (SEO).

The 2009 Search Engine Ranking Factors report released this week from SEOmoz listed the top ranking factors in SEO, which were very similar to the 2007 report. The top three factors on this year’s list – anchor text from external links, keyword use in title tag and raw link popularity – were also in the top five in 2007.
