Though the holiday season usually brings plenty of happy engagement announcements, this week online entertainment news hounds were buzzing about celebrity splits.

Fans of the hit Showtime series Dexter took to the web earlier this week when the news broke that Michael C. Hall, the star of the program, and his wife, costar Jennifer Carpenter, had filed for divorce after two years of marriage.

Carpenter cited irreconcilable differences. No word yet on if the real-life drama will affect the direction of the show.

The entertainment press also clamored to cover the details of another Tinsel Town split: blonde beauty Scarlett Johansson and her handsome husband, Ryan Reynolds, announced that they were parting ways, though fans are left in the dark as to why. Insiders have speculated that time apart created an emotional distance between the couple, but it was rumored that Reynolds might have indulged in a flirtation with Gossip Girl star Blake Lively.

In lighter news, the cast of the Jersey Shore has continued to make headlines and dominate search rankings with their antics, and the news that cast member DJ Pauly D will be getting his own show had fans clamoring for the details. Searches for a "DJ Pauly D spin-off" yield more than 50,000 web results at press time.

According to Variety, Pauly D (real name Paul DelVecchio), has signed a deal with MTV to appear on a show that will chart his fledgling career in the music industry.

In other search rankings news, "Spider-Man" was a much-searched term after news broke that Christopher Tierney, an aerialist performing in the Broadway musical, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, plunged 20 feet when a cable that was supporting the actor snapped. Tierney is reportedly in serious condition, according to Reuters.

Production was halted on Wednesday, but as the saying goes, the show must go on. This time, however, new safety precautions will be implemented, according to CBS news. Tierney was the fourth person to be injured thus far over the course of the seemingly ill-fate show's run.

Lindsay Lohan is no stranger to controversial headlines. So what will turn up this week for those who enter "Lindsay Lohan" into their search bars? The troubled star created a stir on Wednesday after she had a violent altercation with a staff member at the Betty Ford Center, where she's currently being treated, CNN reports.

We bet that next week, Christmas weekend's box office results will be bating conversations on the web and around the water cooler. Tron: Legacy (currently in the No. 1 spot) is likely to continue to draw crowds, and Yogi Bear (No. 2) might fare well on this family-friendly holiday.

It will also be interesting to see how Ben Stiller's latest comedy, "Little Fockers," performs. The comedy, which was released yesterday, also stars Robert De Niro, Blythe Danner, Owen Wilson, Barbara Streisand and Dustin Hoffman. It was panned by the critics, but audiences typically flock Stillers' projects.
